A Health And Physical Education Instructor Instructs Her Students About The Significance Of Alcohol Addiction Signs
Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most under financed co-educational high school in the local community. Even though she had been teaching for only a few years, she had already secured a reputation as an educator with instructional techniques that stimulated and motivated the students in her class to learn and to think.
As an illustration, one Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 she addressed the students in her classroom and stated the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a more wind-ranging perspective and we are also going to learn about some of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a more detailed point of view."
"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will beyond doubt substantiate that an individual with a drinking problem is an alcohol dependent person, but the more signs that a drinker displays, the more likely it is that she or he is an alcohol addicted individual."
Miss Jackson then told the the students that each individual would be held responsible for examining four alcohol dependence signs and then presenting his or her findings to the other class members by way of a seven minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her classroom to study the list and rank the top nine alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After around fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and explained to the students in her classroom that after she analyzes the results, she will reveal her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson told the students in her classroom to go over the information on the sheet of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within 40 or 50 seconds, just about everyone in the classroom raised her or his hand. It was obvious that the pupils had some issues, questions, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism specialists. For example, just about every person in the class disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism professionals, to be exact, "Do you feel very nauseous when you abstain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then informed the pupils in her class why this answer was the most accurate indicator of alcoholism. She highlighted the fact that the primary difference between alcoholism and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.
Primarily this means that when an alcohol dependent person all of a sudden stops drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the alcohol addicted individual, the pupils started to recognize the main difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.
A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class. Based on the enthusiasm manifested by the pupils when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson recognized that she had stimulated and motivated the pupils in her classroom to stop and think about a vital social problem and health issue that exists in our culture.
