It's become evident that in America, the situation that can undermine your financial success is not a handicap, drug addiction, or illness, but actually being a single mother. Single mothers can land in this category through divorce, death, or by choice, but these are not the main reasons why a single mother loses earning power. The main reason for this is because of an inherent bias and discrimination in American business that takes away single mums rights, and discriminates openly against them.
Many single mums have been too tired and over worked to notice this trend, but now this is starting to be a major element in the fight for single mums rights. We live in a society that stipulates that in order to succeed we must play the corporate game, get better jobs, work hard to earn more money so that we can put our children into better educational institutions. However, if you are a single mum this does not apply to you.
If you are a single mother, the perception is that you are a business risk, and in some states, it is legal to ask for the marital status of a job applicant, and find out how many kids there are. Business owners claim this lets them refuse to hire single mothers, and therefore avoid paying health care costs for their children. Or, if they do choose to employ them, to deliberately pay them less to account for perceived health care expenses. But, because it is legal, this is not seen as discrimination. That this form of discrimination is allowed to be practiced in our society has most single mums outraged.
Single mothers were asked to get off welfare and rejoin the workforce, but employers are decidedly biased against them. Many single moms work long hours to support their young ones, with minimal help from the state or errant fathers. Yet, they are hired at lower wages than single or married women, that is, if they can find work. They have minimal support and have to engage someone to care for the children while they are at work. If they get sick, the situation becomes desperate, both in terms of income and child minding.
Some years ago, the government census return showed that over 10 million single mothers live in America. Lots of these single mums are starting to band together in local organizations to help fight for single mums rights. Child care centers, financial and social services are some of the benefits these clubs provide. Other single mums are petitioning government officials to rescind laws that make it acceptable to ask for a mother's marital status or if she has children. There are grass roots movements of single mums in nearly every community across the country that are fighting for single mums rights, so that all single mothers like themselves, will have identical rights at work.
