Create A Balcony Garden To Add Life To Your Home Or Apartment
When you dream of a garden, what do you picture? Perhaps you picture a yard in front of a home that contains flowers and shrubs or vegetables, but who says a garden has to be in the ground? If you have a balcony, you can establish a garden too; it only takes a bit of imagination. Balcony gardens are wonderful spots for sprucing up the exterior of a house or apartment and they're fun to create. When you start a balcony garden, you won't be able to plant directly in the ground, so you will need to get pots or planters to put the plants into. Just don't go overboard when creating your sky garden. Be sure to scale your planting plans to the space or you may find your home or apartment balcony becoming a jungle.
When creating a balcony garden, you're looking to add additional color to the outside of your living space. Flowers and upright or hanging foliage plants are perfect for this makeover. The containers you use for your balcony garden can be of any size or shape, just make sure they're the right size for the plants you plan to include in your garden. As a rule of thumb, plan to put larger pots low to the deck and put your smaller ones higher up, either on a bench or table or tethered to the security barrier of your balcony.
When you have a balcony garden, a balcony above you can be a positive or negative. Plants that receive no rainwater will need to be checked regularly or even daily for moisture loss, as potted plants may become dried out quickly, especially if your spot gets too much wind or hot sun. You should also check on your balcony garden often to assure that all of your plants are getting adequate direct or indirect sunlight as well as an occasional feeding. You may find it helpful to periodically rotate plants into and out of the sun and wheeled supports placed under large pots can be very helpful. A balcony located above you can provide shade for tender plants and a support on which to put up hooks or other hangers for your hanging baskets. When feeding potted plants, it's usually wisest to feed more dilute amounts than called for, but do it a bit more often, and organic fertilizers are much less likely to burn.
