Interested In Planting A Garden?

The decision to plant a garden can result from a host of needs and hopes. Commonly, the primary goal is curb appeal, or the desire to improve the look and value of one's home as the residents and visitors arrive. It rolls out the welcome mat from the front door to the street. The backyard space is often reserved for more private activities such as sipping a beverage on the patio, parties and barbecues or just relaxing in a pleasant spot.

An older property generally already has some garden design elements in place, but the new owners may be impatient to renovate all or part of the residential garden for any number of reasons. Perhaps some of the existing plants are past their prime, offer excess or not enough shade, have outgrown their spots or simply don't suit the owner's taste. In other circumstances, the garden is already attractive but the homeowner wants to pursue additional gardening as a hobby.

Different Types of Gardens

There are nearly endless choices for a garden theme. People often have flower, rock, and water gardens at their homes or may have more basic goals such as growing fresh fruit, vegetables or herbs for the dinner table. Other times the theme can be a favorite plant or flower, such as rose or cactus and succulent gardens. The type of garden may also be dictated or limited by extremes of climate, such as excessively cold or arid conditions.

Preparing to Plant a Garden

After you decide to plant your garden, the next step is deciding the outcome you want. Are you doing it to reduce maintenance, to grow some food crops, or just as a relaxing hobby? You may have to dig out the weeds or remove large sections entirely and amend the soil. This is the time to investigate plant choices that will do well in your garden. Be sure to picture your garden in all the seasons so your design offers something of interest all year around.

Whether you enjoy a hands-on approach, or prefer to spend your garden time relaxing, a peaceful, well-planned garden will reward your efforts many times over.
