Generally, the title senior citizens is a nice way of referring to older persons who have reached the age of retirement or 65 years. In most western countries, retired persons are then qualified to obtain a full social welfare pension. This may happen when they become grand parents, change their work practices or their hobby and recreational interests, and then, take things easy.
Senior citizens are a growing society in these modern times, as the average adult life span grows. This situation has been created by the many medical advancements, enhanced health amenities and the development of new and more effective drugs that have been made throughout the past half century. Added to this the fact that the death rate of babies has dropped significantly, thus increasing the number of babies that reach an advanced age. Senior citizens therefore, are better equipped to fight off afflictions than their forefathers, because of the cheap, superior health care services that exist today.
The general opinion of senior citizens has changed dramatically in recent decades, instead of regarding seniors as a handicap, the public has come to value the various contributions that older folks make to our society. Seniors are staying employed for longer teaching their trade to people and training apprentices. A lot of retired people volunteer their services to charities, just so they can stay willing participants in local affairs assisting people who are often not so well off. In certain cases, charitable institutions would not be able to carry on without the participation and efforts of older people.
As the aging population increases, new industries have been produced to provide for their specific needs. Senior citizens are contributing to the economy as new publicity trends develop to promote the different specialized markets that are being established for their particular requirements. Just look at the number of promotions that are targeted for older people; aged care, over fifties insurance, seniors tours, seniors fitness classes, the number is seemingly endless.
Senior citizens have escaped from the old images of groups of old codgers sitting in a park playing chess, or sitting in a rocker wrapped in a blanket. Today's older generation are much more busy and have part of the economy relying on them for their skills and custom.
