Over 20 years ago, Merck Pharmaceuticals released a drug called proscar to the public. Proscar was accredited for the treatment of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia. The active element in proscar is 5mg of finasteride. The medicine was taken daily by a group of men that were more than sixty, and who were afflicted with the condition, BPH. Finasteride was not only discovered to prevent the development of prostate cancer, but was also seen to stimulate hair growth, and so the hair loss pill was born. Further testing by Merck has proven that the minimum effective quantity of finasteride was 1mg.
Altogether, a two year test performed on over fifteen hundred subjects showed that more than 80 percent of them kept, or in fact, increased their hair count from the neckline to the forehead. This one of a kind experiment started more than ten years ago, and it was reported that the original test subjects actually maintained those great results for four years after the trial was over. The 1mg of finasteride was distributed under the brand name, Propecia.
An added result of ingesting propecia, is that it alters the levels of testosterone in the body, and therefore is available only on prescription. The advice of a doctor must be sought and the suggested dosage followed exactly. Hormonal balances can be fragile and following a regular dose helps to ensure stability.
The shedding of hair might not be an indication that you should commence taking the hair loss pill right away. There is a normal three phase process of hair loss and regeneration that occasionally, can be literally shocked into a premature hair loss stage. This apparently spontaneous shedding, also known as Telegen Effluvium, is a temporary condition and generally leads to replacement hair growth.
Propecia treatment is an extremely gradual procedure and requires patience on the part of the user. One should not count on results for approximately three months, with typical regrowth not noticeable until the eighth month. Maximum results do not show until at least one year after commencement of the treatment.
